Comp AI and Vanta both help prepare for SOC 2, but their public prices do not prove Comp AI cheaper. Choose Comp AI for inspectable code or self-hosting, or Vanta for automated provisioning of Vanta accounts. Comp AI’s task automations require enterprise-licensed access. Managed Comp AI and Vanta can both bundle independent audits.

Comp AI vs Vanta at a glance

Comp AI offers managed and self-hosted paths; Vanta’s offer is a managed platform. Comp AI and Vanta publish no direct prices that establish which costs less for the same SOC 2 scope. Check the entitlements your order includes.

Is free, self-hosted Comp AI comparable to a Vanta subscription?

Self-hosted Comp AI and managed Vanta buy different operating arrangements. Comp AI’s core can be inspected and deployed by your team. Vanta runs its platform for you. A managed Comp AI quote also removes the need to run that platform yourself, so compare managed Comp AI with managed Vanta before evaluating self-hosting separately.

Comp AI’s repository declares an AGPLv3 core and commercial Enterprise Edition. The September 23 task-automation code, checked September 30, requires enterprise-licensed access before those automations execute or publish. The code rejects those actions without an enterprise licence. This boundary applies to those task-automation actions; it does not establish that every AI feature or built-in integration check is paid.

For evidence from a system with no suitable connector, ask Comp AI and Vanta to quote the required automation. Get Comp AI’s task-automation entitlement in writing, then run it in the managed or self-hosted edition you would buy.

The Comp AI deployment guide adds a database, email and background-processing dependencies. The person running production also needs to own storage configuration, credentials, access, backups, updates and recovery. Ask your operations owner to price that work alongside any commercial licence. Code inspection can be a reason to choose Comp AI over Vanta; assumed zero operating cost cannot.

Which AI and account workflows do Comp AI and Vanta offer?

Comp AI and Vanta both offer AI-assisted compliance work. Comp AI describes task-specific evidence agents and browser automations; Vanta describes an AI agent in Essentials and custom monitoring automation in Professional. Have Comp AI and Vanta collect the same evidence and quote the required package.

Comp AI’s Automated Evidence guide describes instructing an agent, supplying access, testing it and publishing the automation. Its Browser Automations guide describes collecting evidence from logged-in admin pages; authentication challenges can require reconnecting. Ask who notices a failed run and supplies the missing evidence. Vanta’s pricing page includes AI evidence and policy functions in Essentials but names custom monitoring tests and automation in Professional. Ask Vanta to quote the plan needed for that same nonstandard source. Test failure recovery in each quoted edition.

Vanta documents SCIM account provisioning; Comp AI’s equivalent support remains unknown in reviewed public material. Vanta’s SCIM documentation, updated August 11 and rechecked September 30, covers granting and removing Vanta accounts, roles and teams. SCIM may require an upgrade or add-on. Ask Comp AI to demonstrate equivalent provisioning and name its entitlement.

Vanta also separates access to Vanta from employment data used for compliance. Removing a SCIM-managed Vanta account leaves its People record unaffected; a separate identity or HR integration maintains that roster. Comp AI and Vanta should both demonstrate the account change and the employment evidence your control needs.

Startups and enterprise teams: what changes the choice?

Comp AI and Vanta both offer guidance for a startup’s first SOC 2. Comp AI is worth testing when inspectable code or deployment control matters; Vanta is worth testing when its account lifecycle and auditor workflow remove required handoffs. A ten-person team still needs someone to approve policies and resolve failures.

For an enterprise team, compare Comp AI and Vanta against mandatory identity controls, permission boundaries and your least standard system. If SCIM is mandatory, Vanta has a documented path to test and quote; Comp AI needs an explicit answer and demonstration. If self-hosting is mandatory, Comp AI has a documented path; Vanta has no established equivalent offer.

Is Comp AI cheaper than Vanta when the audit is included?

Current direct prices do not prove Comp AI cheaper than Vanta for an equivalent program. Comp AI and Vanta both ask for a personalized quote. Comp AI markets a combined platform, audit and penetration-test purchase, while Vanta’s Seamless Audit can also put an independent auditor’s fee into the platform transaction.

Comp AI’s current pricing page gives no public dollar rate. A $199/month figure in third-party comparisons is not a current Comp AI rate card. Its standard terms specify a 12-month minimum commitment, automatic annual renewal and 30 days’ written notice; confirm the terms of your signed order.

Comp AI's public pricing path is a scoped quote, not a dollar rate card.Vendor pricing page captured September 11, 2026; quote-only pricing rechecked September 30. Any guarantee must be confirmed in the signed order.

Vanta’s direct pricing page likewise asks for personalized pricing. Vanta has separate Marketplace and observed-contract price evidence, but there is no matching Comp AI price pool here. Those figures cannot establish which costs less: Comp AI or Vanta. The Vanta pricing guide and Comp AI pricing guide cover each product’s commercial detail.

Comp AI’s bundle and Vanta Seamless Audit should be compared with the same CPA scope. Obtain the legal audit firm’s name, Type I or Type II, observation dates, Trust Services Categories, fee and follow-up work. Name the penetration-test provider and deliverables separately. Neither vendor’s bundle establishes that every possible audit or penetration-test service is included.

Multi-framework and regulated buyers

Comp AI and Vanta both describe reusing overlapping controls across frameworks. For SOC 2 plus ISO 27001, require each proposal to show one reused artifact and one ISO-specific item needing fresh work. For HIPAA or another regulated program, make permitted data, necessary agreements and the framework-specific deliverables written requirements. A framework logo does not settle those duties.

What can your auditor do in Comp AI and Vanta?

Comp AI documents an auditor view, findings and bulk evidence export; Vanta documents evidence requests, comments, request lists and an Auditor API. Choose the edition in which your CPA can review, question and retain the required evidence. Neither Comp AI nor Vanta issues the SOC 2 opinion.

Comp AI’s API documentation describes auditor export and findings. Confirm permissions and date filtering in your deployment. Vanta’s auditor page describes evidence review, requests and syncing with auditor tools. Vanta’s controlled auditor views may require an upgrade or add-on; its information request lists require one.

Vanta’s request-list export is a customer handoff: auditors cannot export that list, and some underlying automated-test data exports as summaries rather than raw files. Comp AI and Vanta should both demonstrate the files your CPA needs to retain. Have your CPA check the export contents and accept any summary before relying on it.

Our directory has 41 attestation-capable CPA firms whose records list Vanta, and currently no attestation-capable firm whose record lists Comp AI. Use the firms listing Vanta or ask candidates in the auditor directory about Comp AI experience directly. The directory gap does not prove that Comp AI has no experienced auditors; a listing does not prove partnership or prior examinations.

Before accepting an audit bundle, ask the named CPA to review one control and one failed-check history. Have the CPA request a correction, then your team export the revised artifact for the CPA to retain. The CPA should confirm the engagement and make its own evidence decisions regardless of which vendor collects the fee.

Can you switch from Vanta to Comp AI during Type II?

Before moving a Type II program from Vanta to Comp AI, have your CPA decide whether the existing observation period can continue. Provide the dated evidence, control history and populations relevant to that period, including records retained in Vanta.

Before leaving Vanta, export the evidence and history the CPA requires and confirm access after termination. In Comp AI, map those artifacts to the same controls and demonstrate how new evidence joins the existing record. Obtain the CPA’s written decision about gaps and the observation period before scheduling the cutover.

For a first Type II program in Comp AI or Vanta, separate readiness, the observation period and report delivery. “Audit-ready in days” describes preparation, not a completed examination of controls operating over a period.

What do Reddit discussions add?

The October 2025 small-team thread raises maintenance burden and self-hosting costs; a Comp AI reply explicitly says it is from the product’s team. The 2025 compliance-in-days thread distinguishes readiness from the Type II period and includes seller replies. Use these older discussions for questions to ask Comp AI and Vanta; they contain no current head-to-head trial.

Run the same Comp AI and Vanta test before signature

Give Comp AI and Vanta the same systems, control and CPA request. Use test accounts and safe sample data in the quoted editions, and keep these outputs:

  1. Define the purchase. Give Comp AI and Vanta identical employee bands, frameworks, control scope, audit period and support needs. Keep two itemized proposals, including licence/plan entitlements and named audit and penetration-test providers.
  2. Produce nonstandard evidence. Ask Comp AI and Vanta to collect the same artifact outside your simplest connector. Test a failed run or expired connection, recovery and a manual fallback. Keep the dated output, control mapping and owner of the remaining work. For self-hosted Comp AI, demonstrate the licensed task automation in that deployment.
  3. Change one person’s access. Ask Comp AI and Vanta to grant and remove a test platform account, then show the person’s separate employment record. Keep the account/role history, personnel evidence and written provisioning entitlement; record any manual step.
  4. Let the intended CPA question it. Have the CPA open the same control in Comp AI and Vanta and request a correction. Have your team export the revised evidence and history for the CPA to retain; Vanta request-list export requires that customer handoff. Keep the files and the CPA’s assessment of access, dates and any summaries.
  5. Reconcile the demo with the order. Ask Comp AI and Vanta to identify every demonstrated feature, support task and export right in the proposed contract. Add internal operating time and any excluded services. Keep the final scope, renewal terms and evidence-exit plan before signature.

Choose Comp AI, Vanta, or neither

Choose Comp AI when

  • Code inspection or self-hosting meets a real deployment requirement, and someone owns production.
  • The quoted edition includes the task automations you need and produces evidence your CPA can use.
  • Guided support, audit and penetration-test scope match the work you want to buy. Take that scope to the Comp AI pricing checklist.

Choose Vanta when

  • You want a managed platform and its documented account lifecycle satisfies your mandatory access requirements.
  • Your chosen plan covers the custom evidence work and your CPA can use the auditor workflow.
  • The complete proposal, including any Seamless Audit package, fits your budget. Next, shortlist CPA firms that list Vanta.

Choose neither when

  • Most evidence stays manual and neither demonstration removes enough work to justify the quote.
  • Your team needs someone to implement and operate controls, while both proposals offer guidance only.
  • Neither edition meets your data, access or evidence-retention requirements. Broaden the shortlist with the SOC 2 software buyer’s guide or find readiness support firms.
