Vanta and Optro (formerly AuditBoard) both run SOC 2 programs but serve different owners. Choose Vanta if a security or compliance team must prove controls to customers, with hourly automated tests, a trust center and help finding a CPA. Choose Optro if internal audit, SOX or risk teams want SOC 2 in the system they use for audit work. A company with SOX duties that also sells software may need both.
AuditBoard has been called Optro since its March 9, 2026 rebrand, which the company describes as the same platform under a new name; Hg acquired AuditBoard in July 2024. The common mistake on this pair is reading one vendor’s comparison page as fact about the other. Vanta’s and Drata’s pages describe Optro as point-in-time only, while Optro’s own documentation describes continuous monitoring; the claim check below sorts out which statements hold. Neither Vanta nor Optro issues the SOC 2 report: an independent CPA firm examines your controls and signs it. For each product on its own, see the Vanta review, the Vanta profile and the Optro profile.
Which fits a startup, a scaling SaaS company or an enterprise?
Company size does not settle Vanta vs Optro; the team that owns the purchase does. Vanta is the closer fit when a security or compliance team needs SOC 2 to win and keep customers. Optro is the closer fit when internal audit, SOX or enterprise risk teams want SOC 2 controls in the same system as their audit plan and financial controls.
| Your situation | Start with | Why | Prove before signing |
|---|---|---|---|
| First SOC 2 at a startup or small SaaS company | Vanta | Vanta lists packages on AWS Marketplace for teams of 1 to 20 employees, publishes hourly automated tests and offers an auditor network or your own CPA. Optro publishes no price and sells through guided enterprise implementation. | Which plan includes the auditor request list and controlled auditor views, and the renewal terms. |
| Growing SaaS company adding ISO 27001, HIPAA or customer questionnaires | Vanta, unless your company already runs Optro | Both cross-map controls across frameworks and both automate questionnaire answers. Vanta also sells a customer-facing trust center; Optro's product catalog does not include one. | One control mapped to two frameworks, with an exception open in only one. |
| Enterprise security team proving controls across business units | Shortlist both | Vanta documents Workspaces for business units and subsidiaries, which may need an upgrade. Optro documents separate compliance programs per auditable entity with shared controls and evidence. | Two entity scopes kept apart, viewed through your CPA's account. |
| Internal audit, SOX or enterprise risk team | Optro | Optro documents audit planning, work programs, workpapers, a SOX risk-control matrix and controls testing. Vanta lists no SOX framework, and its internal-audit workflow serves ISO 27001. | Which Optro products are licensed, and how a SOC 2 control reaches the audit plan. |
| Private company preparing for an IPO | Optro for SOX readiness; either for SOC 2 | Optro says private companies use its Controls Management product to prepare for SOX 12 to 18 months before an IPO. SOC 2 for customers can run in either product. | Whether one system or two will own each shared control. |
| Public company that also sells software to businesses | Possibly both, with named owners | Optro can hold the internal-audit and SOX program; Vanta can hold the customer-facing SOC 2 evidence, trust center and questionnaires. | Which system owns each control, finding and evidence file, and how updates reach the other. |
Fit judgments are ours, from each vendor's product and pricing pages checked October 8, 2026. They describe documented capabilities, not results from our own accounts.
For a startup’s first SOC 2, Vanta is the more direct fit. Vanta’s AWS Marketplace listing starts its Essentials package at $14,000 for a 12-month contract covering 1 to 20 employees, and Vanta’s pricing page lists access to its auditor network alongside the option to bring your own auditor. Optro publishes no price, and its implementation runs through Optro’s services team or certified partners. Optro still supports SOC 2, so a startup inside a group that already runs Optro can ask for a SOC 2 scope on the existing contract.
For an enterprise, Vanta and Optro answer to different owners. Vanta’s enterprise case rests on hourly tests, more than 400 advertised integrations, Workspaces for business units, a trust center and help finding a CPA. Optro’s rests on one system for internal audit, SOX, controls, risk and compliance across auditable entities. If the security team owns customer assurance and internal audit owns SOX, both products may end up in the building; decide which one owns each shared control before buying the second.
G2 listed both at 4.6 out of 5: Optro from 1,624 reviews on September 18, 2026 and Vanta from 2,728 on September 30, 2026. The two review pools come from different buyers using the products for different jobs, so the tie does not decide this pair.
What do Vanta and Optro each cover?
Vanta and Optro overlap on SOC 2 evidence, framework mapping, questionnaires and auditor workspaces; Optro adds internal audit and SOX, and Vanta adds a trust center and a route to a CPA firm. The table gives each side’s documented position, with unknowns left as unknowns.
| Criterion | Vanta | Optro | Evidence class |
|---|---|---|---|
| SOC 2 evidence and testing | Connected evidence collection and more than 1,400 automated tests that Vanta says run hourly. | Compliance Management: automated evidence collection, control testing and continuous-monitoring templates for common IT controls. No published interval. | Vendor product pages. |
| Frameworks | 35+ claimed, cross-mapped, plus custom frameworks. | 30+ preloaded, mapped to common controls, plus custom frameworks. | Vendor-reported. |
| Internal audit | An ISO 27001 internal-audit workflow: assign internal auditors, track reviews, centralize findings. No audit plan or workpaper module described. | OpsAudit: risk-aligned planning, work programs, fieldwork, document requests, workpaper audit logs and issues. | Vendor product pages. |
| SOX | Not among the frameworks on Vanta's product pages. | SOX Management: out-of-the-box risk-control matrix, testing and deficiencies. Controls Management adds 302 and 404 certification workflows. | Vendor product pages. |
| Multiple entities | Workspaces for business units and subsidiaries, with an aggregate console. May require an upgrade or add-on. | Separate compliance programs per auditable entity, sharing controls and evidence. | Vendor documentation; permissions need a demonstration. |
| Customer trust | Trust Center and Questionnaire Automation on its pricing page; plan inclusion varies. | Automated Security Questionnaires drafts answers for human review. No customer-facing trust center in the product catalog. | Vendor product and pricing pages. |
| Integrations | 400+ advertised. | 200+ advertised on its frameworks page; some product pages state lower counts. | Vendor-reported totals; a count does not show evidence depth for your systems. |
| SCIM account lifecycle | Provisions, deprovisions and updates roles for Vanta users. May require an upgrade or add-on. | SAML 2.0 and SCIM supported. Tier inclusion unconfirmed. | Vendor help and security documentation. |
| External CPA workspace | Full or controlled auditor views and request lists; some functions require an upgrade or add-on. | Separate External Audit Projects with restricted data access. Export and auditor-seat entitlements unknown. | Vendor help documentation; Optro product description. |
| Finding a CPA firm | Auditor network or your own CPA; Seamless Audit can bundle the audit fee with the platform. | No CPA marketplace or bundled examination described. Bring your own firm. | Vendor pages. |
| Price | Personalized direct quote. AWS Marketplace starting prices for small teams; Vendr reports a $20,000 median contract. | Quote only. No public price. | Public commercial pages; third-party procurement data. |
| CPA candidates in our directory | Firms listed: 40. | Firms listed: 1. | Attestation-capable firms in our auditor directory. |

Can Vanta or Optro run internal audit and SOX?
Optro can; Vanta is not built for it. Optro documents an internal-audit product (OpsAudit) with planning, work programs, fieldwork and workpaper audit logs, and a SOX product with a risk-control matrix, testing and deficiency tracking. Vanta’s ISO 27001 page describes an internal-audit workflow, which covers that standard’s requirement to audit your own management system. It is not an audit plan, a workpaper system or SOX testing, and SOX does not appear among the frameworks on Vanta’s product pages.
Optro sells Compliance Management, Controls Management, OpsAudit, SOX Management and IT Risk & Compliance as named products, and its public pages do not say which are bundled. Name each one your proposal includes. The Optro profile lists the wider catalog.
If you already run AuditBoard, evaluate Optro as the continuation of that platform: compare adding Vanta for security evidence with extending your Optro contract to SOC 2. If Vanta and Optro will coexist, name the system that owns each control and finding, and show how an update in one reaches the other.
Is Optro point-in-time only, as Vanta’s comparison says?
No: Optro’s own pages describe continuous monitoring, though Optro publishes no testing interval and Vanta does. Vanta’s compare page for Optro and Drata’s Optro comparison are both marketing about a competitor. The table checks their main claims against Optro’s documentation.
| Claim about Optro | What Optro's own pages say | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| "No auto testing" and "point-in-time evidence gathering only" (Vanta) | Compliance Management offers continuous-monitoring templates for common IT controls; Controls Management describes continuous control testing on real-time data; IT Risk & Compliance describes recurring data intake, control baselines and alerts. | The run history for one control across your observation period. |
| About 145 integrations (Vanta) | 200+ out-of-the-box integrations on its frameworks page; some product pages state lower counts. | Your own in-scope systems in each catalog. |
| No questionnaire automation (Vanta's three-way guide) | Automated Security Questionnaires drafts answers from prior questionnaires, SOC 2 reports and policies, for human review. Uploads are Excel files. | Your customers' questionnaire formats and portals. |
| No native trust center (Vanta and Drata) | Consistent with Optro's product catalog, which lists no customer-facing trust center. | If you publish a trust center, budget a separate tool alongside Optro. |
| Smaller framework library (Vanta: under 30) | 30+ preloaded frameworks; Vanta claims 35+. | The exact frameworks and versions you need, in both libraries. |
Vanta, Drata and Optro pages read October 8, 2026. All are vendor statements; none is an independent test.
Vanta advertises more than 1,400 tests running hourly. Optro’s Compliance Management page names continuous-monitoring templates but no fixed schedule, and its timing can depend on the workflow and integration. Neither statement shows how often your evidence is actually collected. For a SOC 2 Type 2 program, have each platform retrieve a dated sample, a failed result and its resolution from the intended observation period. Where a custom or regulated system lacks automated collection, name the manual artifact, owner and retention method in each proposal.
Can Vanta and Optro reuse a control without hiding unfinished work?
Both Vanta and Optro document shared controls across frameworks, so the test is whether one scope’s approval can hide another scope’s open exception. Vanta’s automated-compliance page describes cross-mapping and custom controls. Optro’s Compliance Management page describes separate programs per auditable entity with shared evidence.
Use a control you already run, such as a quarterly access review shared by SOC 2 and ISO 27001. In each product, complete the review for one scope, leave one exception open in the other, and open both. The complete review should not close the exception, and each scope should keep its own population, reviewer, approval and dated evidence. Record any setup, extra product or manual step needed to keep them apart. An enterprise or regulated group should repeat the test across two entities and ask who can see each one.
What can your CPA see and retain in Vanta and Optro?
Vanta documents what an auditor can view and export; Optro describes a separate auditor workspace but not its export rights or seat count. Neither platform issues the SOC 2 report.
Finding the CPA. Our directory lists 40 attestation-capable CPA firms that name Vanta among their platforms, and 1 that name Optro. Vanta has a dedicated list of auditors who work with Vanta. For Optro, search the auditor directory and confirm the firm’s recent experience with the product. Vanta says its Seamless Audit package can bundle an independent auditor’s fee with the platform. Optro’s public material describes no CPA marketplace or bundled examination, so plan to bring and vet your own firm. A higher candidate count helps you find firms; it does not make Vanta the better product.
Working inside the product. Vanta’s workflow is driven by a request list: the first list is imported, only the auditor adds requests after that, and on a custom request list the population pages stay hidden until you turn them on. Under Vanta’s auditor-view guide, a controlled view limits which attributes the CPA sees, so some requests may need manual answers. The customer, not the auditor, exports the request list with its evidence (request-list guide); the auditor can export controls and control activity. Optro’s External Audit Projects are separate workspaces where the auditor works on evidence requests while access to your data stays restricted, and its Controls Management page says permissions let external auditors carry out tasks on their own. Optro does not say what an auditor can sample, export or retain there, or how many auditor seats are included. Have Optro show those actions with the intended CPA’s account and put the answers in the proposal.
If you switch during a Type 2 observation period, keep the prior evidence accessible until the CPA has assessed continuity and kept the samples it needs. In either platform, check that the migration carried over dated history, exceptions and approvals, not just the controls.
How should you compare the cost of Vanta and Optro?
Neither Vanta nor Optro publishes a price for a full direct purchase, and only Vanta has public reference points. Vanta’s AWS Marketplace listing (checked October 20, 2026) starts its Essentials package at $14,000 for a 12-month contract covering 1 to 20 employees, and Vendr reports a $20,000 median annual Vanta contract (checked October 8, 2026). Optro publishes no price. The Vanta figures describe one SOC 2 platform for small teams, so they set no floor or ratio for an Optro proposal that includes internal audit or SOX. The Vanta pricing guide covers Vanta’s purchase channels; ask Optro’s sales team for a scoped quote.
Give both vendors the same list: entities, employees, frameworks, source systems, control owners, external auditors, required workpapers, reports and retained history. Price the SOC 2 work separately from any internal-audit or financial-controls system you plan to replace, or a broad Optro proposal and a narrower Vanta subscription will answer different questions.
| Cost or entitlement | What to obtain from both vendors |
|---|---|
| Products and scope | Named plans or products, frameworks, entities, users, auditor accounts, AI functions and reporting rights. |
| Implementation | Who maps existing controls, imports history, configures permissions and trains owners; included hours and extra fees. |
| CPA examination | Named CPA firm, independent engagement, examination scope and fee, and whether billing is separate or combined. |
| Renewal and exit | Renewal treatment, growth charges, support, export formats, historical access and overlap costs when switching. |
A total that mixes SOC 2 and internal-audit products cannot be matched line by line to a Vanta subscription, so ask for each product priced on its own line.
Optro offers implementation, configuration and partner services; Vanta describes guided setup and a service-partner network. Get the delivery hours and fees into the order.
What should Vanta and Optro demonstrate before you sign?
Run the same five steps in Vanta and Optro, in the same order, with your compliance lead, an internal-audit representative when relevant, and the intended CPA. Use the products actually quoted, and keep each step’s output beside the proposal.
Do: Connect the same in-scope system, or upload the same manual artifact, in Vanta and in Optro.
Keep: The source record, collection date, control mapping and any manual work left over.
Do: Map the control to SOC 2 and a second framework, and to a second entity if you have one. Leave one exception open in only one scope.
Keep: Each scope's population, owner, approval and the open exception.
Do: Carry the control into a workpaper, a finding and a remediation task.
Keep: The history, the permission boundaries and any action that needed another product or system.
Do: Have the CPA retrieve a dated sample, request a follow-up and export what it would retain.
Keep: The exported files and the CPA's view of anything missing or needing your help.
Do: Have each vendor name the products, services and rights behind every action you saw.
Keep: An itemized first-year and renewal proposal, with the CPA engagement and exit costs, before signature.
Choose Vanta, choose Optro, or choose neither
Choose Vanta
- The purchase is mainly SOC 2 security evidence, customer trust and external-auditor collaboration, while your team or another system handles internal audit and SOX.
- The proposed Vanta plan collects the required records and gives your CPA workable access and retained history.
- The demonstrated workflow and written scope justify the full cost. Continue with the Vanta pricing guide or the auditors who work with Vanta.
Choose Optro
- SOC 2 must connect to internal-audit workpapers, SOX controls or several entity programs that your team will manage together.
- The proposed Optro products keep each scope’s owners, exceptions and permissions while reusing appropriate evidence.
- The implementation owner and external-CPA handoff are clear, and you have a CPA firm lined up. Check the Optro software profile, then find a firm in the auditor directory.
Choose neither
- You need a person to operate the compliance program, and neither proposal assigns that work under a sufficient service scope.
- Your critical systems, dated evidence or CPA requirements fail the demonstration in both products.
- You are still deciding which type of platform belongs on the shortlist. Use Vanta alternatives, the enterprise GRC software guide or the software directory to compare other paths.
